As a direct result of participating in the 6th Grade program at NCMS, the students will be able to:
The following relates to the use of windows desktop software (Computer Literacy).
- Create a folder on the desktop.
- Create a subfolder within a folder.
- Organizing folders on a computer (file management).
- Create specific names of folders on a computer to easily locate using a search.
- Search for work, document and/or folders on the computer.
- Save pictures to a folder.
The following relates to the use of Microsoft Word (Computer Literacy)
- Open Microsoft Word
- Save a Microsoft Word document in a specific folder.
- Describe the uses of Microsoft Word (letters, reports, etc.)
- Locate the menu bar on Microsoft Word.
- Identify each menu item on menu bar (File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, etc)
- Describe the general use of each menu item on the menu bar.
- Describe the general use of the Standard and Formatting menu items.
- Discuss the importance of learning how to use the keyboard efficiently will enhance his/her ability to use this software more effectively.
- Use spell check to correct any spelling errors.
- Use the thesaurus to choose a different word to use.

- Open Microsoft PowerPoint
- Save a PowerPoint document in a specific folder.
- Describe the uses of Microsoft PowerPoint (presentation software).
- Locate the menu bar on Microsoft PowerPoint
- Discuss the similarities and differences of the Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint menu bars.
- Identify the steps to do the following:
§ Insert a new slide
§ Select a slide format for a specific use (organization of a slide).
§ Insert pictures in a slide from a folder.
§ Use custom animation and slide transitions to enhance a presentation.
The following relates to Thematic Unit on bridges (Technology Education).
- Identify the five basic types of bridges
- Identify the parts of each type of bridge
- Describe the similarities and differences of each type of bridge.
- Create a folder called “Bridges” in a specific folder (sub folder).
- Create subfolders for each type of bridge within a folder called “bridges”.
- Locate pictures of the five different types of bridges and place them in the appropriate folder (folder with the specific name of the bridge)
- Open PowerPoint and create a title page for the PowerPoint presentation
- Create five slides (one for each type of bridge) with a slide layout that allows for four pictures.
- Insert pictures (four per slide) within each specific type of bridge.
- Create animation for each picture within the slide for all five slides.

- Using the legs of a right triangle the students will determine the length of the line opposite the 90 degree angle given the measurements of the two other sides.
- Describe how using right triangles relates to truss bridges.
- Use an architectural ruler and know what it means to construct an object to scale.
- After designing a truss bridge the students will be able to construct a bridge to scale.
