What is STEM?
The acronym STEM refers to the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Science deals with and seeks the understanding of the natural world. Technology is defined as the modification of the natural world to meet human wants and needs. Engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgement to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. Mathematics is the science of patterns and relationships. It provides an exact language for technology, science and engineering.
How is STEM Applied?
In order to understand how these content areas can be connected consider the natural substance called water. A scientist would study water and possibly determine how other objects relate to it. The process of creating technology would require another to manipulate land masses to move the water in order to allow a water vehicle to travel through. An engineer may design a canal to solve the problem of moving a water vehicle to a higher level through interconnected waterways. The engineer would use the language of math for calculations and measurement to design and construct it to a specific specification. Each content area provides the student with the necessary tools to study, manipulate, create, design and constuct the world in which we live to better our lives.
